Please help - Installing reporting services on Windows 2000 professional

I have my developer SQL server on a Windows 2000 professional
workstation company will not let me go for a Windows 2003 server.
I am already running ASP.Net Web Matrix which as it own ASP.Net web
server on my PC please clarify if I can install reporting services on
this web server.
Or if I need IIS please help where can I download IIS6 for WIndows
2000 professional did quite a bit of search cannot find the link.

Windows 2000 uses IIS 5.0.
It's a while since I used Windows 2000 but I think you can install IIS
5.0 using Add/Remove Programs.
Or simply put the Windows CD in the drive and select the option that
allows you to install additional components.

MVP - InfoPath|||By default IIS is not running in 2000 Professional. What you need to do is
go to control panel, add remove programs and then on the left pane (I am
remembering this so exactly how you get to it might be off a little) is
something you select to add remove Windows components. That is where you
install IIS. You will be prompted for your Windows install disk (I believe,
it has been awhile). You will also need to install dotnet 1.1 after you get
IIS installed.

Will reporting services work on SQL Developer edition and Windows 2000
Professional if I install IIS 5.
Also, can you please recommend some 3rd party authoring tools that
enable quick authoring of reporting services reports and deploying
them if thru Excel it will be very good.

Note that it says to use the version of database to match the version of RS.
To me that means if you have developer edition of SQL Server that you should
use the same or Reporting Services (i.e. this is good for test and
development only).

I am trying to open Reposrt Services , I get the following error.
'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting
Services\ReportManager\'. The directory does not exist or is not accessible
because of security settings.]
I do not know what went wrong. Could any one please help.

How can i use a java script function in sql reporting services.
I have a textbox - which i want to make as a hyperlink and when the user
clicks on it - it has to open another report or say url in another browser.
i am usin
<hyperlink>="javascript:window.open('http://www.google.com',_blank)"</hyperlink>
but it doesnt work . Can you please help me how to do this ?

RPDon't be doing this by hand. Use RS capabilities. For the textbox do a right
mouse click, properties, advanced, navigation, jump to URL.
Then put in this for a report with parameters:
Here is an example of a Jump to URL link I use. This causes Excel to come up
with the data in a separate window:

"?/SomeFolder/SomeReport&ParamName=" & Parameters!ParamName.Value &
"&rs:Format=CSV&rc:Encoding=ASCII','_blank'))"

Note that you have to have SP1 or SP2 installed. This functionality was

Please guys i am confused between VS 2003 and RS 2005

Is it possible to use SQL server reporting services 2005 with Visual Studio 2003

I mean when you say new project under VS 2003 does it show under project types:

Business intelligence projects using Reporting services 2005.

Since we have done lot of work using VS 2003(framework 1.1) and now really does not want to get into using Framework 2.0 (VS2005)

But want to use just the reporting services 2005 with VS 2003.

You can create RS 2000 reports with VS 2003 and deploy them to a 2005 Reporting server however you won't be able to use any of the new features of RS 2005.

I would advise you to use the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio to develop RS 2005 reports.

Will i be able to call the reports via URL or may be webreference it via WSDL reportingservices.exe from VS 2003.

We have a requirement to develop almost 75 reports, once we develop those reports using RS 2005, ultimately we have to provide an interface in VS 2003 .aspx page to call those reports. is that possible.

Let me just repharase to make sure I understand you correctly.

You wish develop a set of reports and have them deployed to a reporting services 2005 report server. You then need to develop a front end using VS 2003 and the .NET Framework version 1.1. You want to know whether you can reference a reporting services 2005 web service from your VS 2003 project.

I see no problem with this. You can add a webreference to a web service developed with any version. The WSDL is the definition of the web service and acts like an interface or a contract.

Plan Maintenance will not execute

My plan Maintenance to Optimize, TRN Backup and Reporting
has been running for several months. A few days ago, I
started getting the following in "View Job History":
"Executed as user: domain\Administrator. sqlmaint.exe
failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed."
There is no log file created, even though I requested one,
which leads me to believe the Job never actually started.

By any chance did you changed the recovery model for a database to SIMPLE
and then turned back to BULK_LOGGED. In this
case you have to do a FULL database backup for that database.
command:

BACKUP database <dbname> to disk='d:\backup\dbname.bak' with init

Also, I have take a full backup every day via the same
command you sent me.

I am desperate to get output from Reporting Services into a text

Outside of the export option of Reporting Services and the Report Mgr,
you would most likely need to design a custom asp.net application that
could output the results of an ADO.NET dataset. An SSRS report could
be executed programmatically (this link might help:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964126.aspx#sqldocum_topic7
). If exporting to PDF programmatically is an option, I would suggest
using the open source library iTextSharp (http://sourceforge.net/
projects/itextsharp/ ). Crystal Reports could be setup via a report
viewer control and cr.exe to programmatically export a report to text
via an application. Hope this helps.

Place one Chart on top of another one

I am trying to place one chart on top of another chart in report designer.
Everything looks go. So, I publish the report to Reporting Servers and for
some reason the graphs are placed next to one another instead of being on top
of each other. How can I fix this problem?
The reason why I am placing one chart on top of another chart is because I
can not figure out how to pass a value to CROSS AT property in a Bubble
chart. Does anyone know how to do this as well?

PeterHTML renderer does not support overlapping objects. You can try and render
it PDF or Jpeg and it will be overlapped, but not in HTML.

Thanks for the response. When I export the report to pdf is does work.
However, when I publish the report to Reporting Services the default viewer
is HTML. Is there away to set the default view in Reporting Services to PDF?

That worked thanks. I almost have it. This particular report has parameter
prompts. Is there away for the user to have the ability to pick there own
parameter values from the prompts or am I stuck hard coding in the values for
them?

If you create a report parameter and don't specify any values, then the user
will get a text box where they can type anything. I think that's what you're
asking about -- usually people ask the opposite, how to create drop down
lists or how to fill those lists from a query. This is all well documented
in BOL, see the article "Using Parameters in a Report."
