Please help ??

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows XP Pro with SP2.

I have also installed ASP.NET Web Matrix on same machine. Upon selecting the Data tab (next to the Workspace tab), I click on the Database Connection button. I am asked if I want to connect to an Access db or a SQL Server db. I select the SQL Server db and I then receive a dialog box that asks me the Server Name: the default is (local) and I have used that as well as localhost. I use SQL Server authentication and enter a username of sa and a password that I set up during the installation process. I finally select the Create a New Database link and I then get the message SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

I have checked that my services are running. I also have uninstalled and reinstalled both SQL Server Express 2005 and ASP.NET Web Matrix but still the same glitch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Glenn

Hello All,

I have solved my problem. The server name was my issue. I had list (local), localhost and my machine name, none of which worked. I then added my machine name\sqlexpress and it worked.

Please Help : visual studio 2005 beta 2 + SQL Server 2005 + C#

Hi,

I have the Microsoft.SQL.Server.2005.Enterprise.July.CTP.

I have installed it on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.

After installation I found that Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 installed with it , but when I Opent it I can't create C# prject since you can't create anything other than 'Business Intelligence Projects'.

I need to write a programs using C# so How can I do that with SQL.Server.2005.Enterprise.July.CTP

Thanks,

Aya.

First of all: Why are you using such an old version of VS ? As I can remember the CTP Version are not longer legal as the RTM version is on market.

But anyway, unless you install a Visual Studio (or Visual Studio Epxress, which is free for download), you installed just the surface for administering the SQL Server you won′t have the support for .NET languages.

HTH, jens Suessmeyer.|||

Thank you too much for your reply.

I have both VS2005 professional Edition , and VS2005 Express edition , and I am already trying to install them with SQL Server 2005 using the installation instructions of microsoft but I am always get a problem in the .Net framework part since the SQL Server 2005 uses .Net framework 2.0 Beta 2 and VS2005 uses .Net Framework 2.0.

So if I try to install VS2005 then SQL Server ,it tolds me that I must remove any previous versions of .NET framework, Sql server editions, ...........

If I try the reverse process , the SQL server first, the VS2005 will need to remove it befor the installation.

I don't know waht can I do , please help me.

Thanks,

Aya.

|||If you had installed Visual Studio or SQL Server while there were in the beta, you first have to uninstall everything SQL Server Beta and VS .NET beta from your computer. Aftwerwards deinstall the .Net Framework 2.0 from your computer and do a "clean" reinstall with the components.

In the beta hostiroy there were only specific version of Yukon and the .Net Framework which worked together, you always have to get the most recent versions, or the compliant one to get the system to work.

HTH, jens Suessmeyer.|||

Thanks , but did you means that I can't install that versions together.

If yes, what is the compatible versions of SQL Server and VS2005.

Now I have 2 OS on my machine:

WIndows server 2003 ==> has SQL Server 2005 installed on it , and

Windows xp sp2 ==> has VS2005 installed on it,

can I uses the Database that is created in C# application using SQL Express edition in the SQL server 2005 Enterprise.

Thanks.

Aya.

|||If you you somewhere have any beta installed I would deinstall that and resinatll the RTM versions, there were many changes in the version (even since July CTP), classes which became obsolte, methods which signature changed, so it would be easier dealing on both sides with the sam e framework.

HTH, jens Suessmeyer.

Please help - SQL Server Services are missing

I am running SQL 2K on Windows 2000. Apparently for no reason when I
attempted restarting Win 2K I got the error
\Winnt\System32\Config\System is missing or corrupt.
I tried repairing did not work and I did not have a emergency repair
backup disk I used Win2K got in on Console mode and restore
C:\winnt\repair\system to \winnt\System32\config\system
Now I can boot into my Win2K Server all software works except that my
SQL Server services have all gone missing in Services.
When I use service manager I get the following message "The specified
service does not exist as an service". When I attempt to start SQL
Server I get the following error:
An error 1060-(The specified service does not exist as an installed
service) occurred while performing this service operation on the
MSSQLServer service.
Please advice how I can recreate or regenerate all the SQL Server and
Analysis Services services.
Thanks
SimonHello Simon
Sounds like there was some type of catastrophic error at OS/hardware level.
This most likely resulted in some of the registry being corrupted hence
affecting SQL Server. If registry has corrupted in this manner, chances are
that some/all other applications on that machine may be affected also.
I would advise you to get the System Eventlog from the machine and try to
diagnose what happened. If the issue has been diagnosed and fixed already,
then go ahead and reinstall the OS and all other applications. If you have
a backup of the entire machine (including registry) then it may save you
time just by restoring the backup.

PLEASE HELP - Remote connection to SQL Server 2005 fall over after 100 seconds

Hi,
I am remotely accessing SQL Server 2005 using an import manager,
through a windows authentication login.
I start the loading, it connects perfectly at first but at the 100
second mark I get the error
"[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server d
oes
not exist or access denied" it then reconnects and continues to load
but really slowly. So it looks like a timeout is occuring at 100
seconds
I have tried to change the connection timeout, the execution timeout
and the remote login timeout, nothing stops this happening.
The version of sql I am using is a SQL Server 2005 Evaluation edition.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
ArchanaIs there some reason you're using the ODBC driver to access SQL Server
instead of a native provider?

The loading is going through a third party import manager, they must
be setting the ODBC driver to access SQL Server.
However when the company who wrote the import manager test it in their
environment replicating what I do they have no problems and it loads
fine

Karen,
Windows 2000 uses IIS 5.0.
It's a while since I used Windows 2000 but I think you can install IIS
5.0 using Add/Remove Programs.
Or simply put the Windows CD in the drive and select the option that
allows you to install additional components.
Andrew Watt
MVP - InfoPath|||By default IIS is not running in 2000 Professional. What you need to do is
go to control panel, add remove programs and then on the left pane (I am
remembering this so exactly how you get to it might be off a little) is
something you select to add remove Windows components. That is where you
install IIS. You will be prompted for your Windows install disk (I believe,
it has been awhile). You will also need to install dotnet 1.1 after you get
IIS installed.

Thanks for the quick feedback.
Will reporting services work on SQL Developer edition and Windows 2000
Professional if I install IIS 5.
Also, can you please recommend some 3rd party authoring tools that
enable quick authoring of reporting services reports and deploying
them if thru Excel it will be very good.
Thanks

Definitely worth reading:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/deploy/rsdepgd.mspx
As far as the database
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/reporting/productinfo/sysreqs.asp
Note that it says to use the version of database to match the version of RS.
To me that means if you have developer edition of SQL Server that you should
use the same or Reporting Services (i.e. this is good for test and
development only).
MS has a partner page:

PLEASE HELP - Accessing Web Services through Windows App

I am running a vb.net application that is using the Web Service to
issue Update Snapshot. There is a Windows account we are using as a
Service account that has the proper permissions to Generate Events.
The application is running on AutoSys on a 2003 server. I have
confirmed that it will run under this users credentials manually by
logging into the server as the user and firing the app. It works
without a problem. This was using Default Credentials.

The AutoSys job is configured to run under this user's credentials.
There are three ways I have executed this application

>>Through AutoSys running as the user with the proper permissions (this is in place of a Local Service account which is default for AutoSys. This windows user has local admin permissions on the AutoSys server as well as Generate Event permission as confirmed before)
>>By logging into the server as Administrator and executing the app with "Run As..." set to the Windows ID
>>By switching to new.NetworkCredentials and passing the hardcoded username/pass/domain

For all of the above scenarios - it fails

The ONLY time it successfully issues UpdateSnapshot is when I am
logged in to the server as the user in question. In ALL other
instances detailed above it fails and the following comes out of the
event log

"Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'MyDomainName'.

I have no idea why it is choking on the Domain Name in all three of
those scenarios.

Do I need to impersonate that user through code when passing the Web
Service credentials?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help - I need to wrap this up. ANY HELP WOULD BE
GREATLY APPRECIATED

Could you show a sample of your code? Syntax error indicates compilation/parsing error. AutoSys method #2 or #3 sound like they should be workable.

Thank you.

|||

I was wrong (partially) - the error I am referring to in the original post is being caused by my attempt to trap the error and write it to a log table in SQL Server. The error is actually as follows

The permissions granted to user 'mydomain\myuser' are insufficient for performing this operation

The fact that there are single quotes in the error is causing a syntax error in my SQL statement.

So - the actual user still does not have the permissions needed to issue UpdateSnapshot. I have confirmed with the Administrators that the user is in a role on the server that contains Generate Events and is also a Browser on all reports on the server.

I did this before in a previous environment and it worked perfectly. Can anyone definitively tell me what permissions are required in order to do things like UpdateSnapshot, FireEvent, CreateSubscription? I thought Generate Events was all that was needed.

During testing I was using my ID to do it and it worked. So I thought I could just create a dummy account and give it the permissions. I am stumped

|||

For update snapshot, you need Execute permission on the report you operate on. You can get it from Manage Report or Manager History task.

You are right for FireEvent you need Generate Event task (which contains generate event permission).

For CreateSubscription, you need either CreateSubscription or CreateAnySubscription permission. It is in "Manage Individual Subscriptions" or "Manage Any subscriptions" task.

|||

Thank you - I did discover that I was looking at the wrong permissions for Updating a Snapshot. The problem I originally had raises and interesting question. How do I handle the SOAP exception with the single quotes in it if I want to write that to a SQL Table? Seems odd that an error would contain single quotes!

|||This is the way we choose to mark the name (RS item name, username, etc.). I guess you can do a string replacing before you insert into your table.sql

Please forgive me....

I know this has been talked about again, and again.. but
This is what i got..
1. 2x Windows 2003 Ent servers.. attached to a dell powervault 220s
storage array that has
a. 3x arrays, 1 for the the quorom, 1 for each clusternode's
data disk
2. SQL 2005 Installed with a default instance named lets say sql1 as
the virtual servername, and it's IP address
What the developers said they need / want is another "default" instance,
or something that from there programs just call a single name instead of
having to use the virtualservername\instance name so something more like
sql2, is this possible... i have been reading that it isn't.. that you will
end up with virtualservername\instance for anything other then the default
instance. Also i have been reading that you can alias the
virtualservername\instance in DNS with a SRV record, but i dont seem to have
a type of _sql or something listed in the srv records available to me on my
2000 AD,,, what am i missing to make this work the way the developers needs?
Please help me, thanks!
So what they're saying is they need sql2 instead of sql1\B? Have them go to
the CFO and cost justify why buying another cluster is worth them not having
to type those two extra characters. Let us know what he says.

Additionally: unless the developers are hard-coding the name of the
server into their apps (which would be the height of stupidity, IMO),
the 'virtualserver\instance' name should be transparently
interchangeable with the default instance's 'server' name.
My organization has several apps that were originally implemented on
individual hosts using the default instance on each host. We ponied up
for some big hardware to create a cluster, and now we run several named
instances on an active/active cluster without any special
support/assistance from the developers: we simply substituted the
'servername' with 'server\instance' in all the configuration locations
(whether it was an ODBC DSN, registry string or INI file) to get it to
'just work.'
AFAIK, this is supported because of the SQL Server driver, not the
creative coding of the application developer.

Please advise!

Hi there!!

I just want to ask one question and i am looking for advice or recommendation.

I want to make an application using windows application in .NET. this application is only to have one or two users to enter details of clients on the database using the application and it will be a search for client name or number and other search methods which is similar.

My question now, what database shall i use for this kind of application SQL server or MS Access. i am looking for a new product to use as the cleint can not afford expensive software. Please advise!! thanks!!What about the free version of MS SQL Server (called MSDE)?

Functionaly it's the same as regular SQL Server, but with some performance restrictions (not intended for large number of users) and does not come with Enterprise Manager.

Cheers...|||... or the SQL 2005 EXPRESS edition which is a free download from MS. It's the full monty apart from enterprise-level features, and it's restricted to 1 processor and a 4Gb database, but it is free and will integrate fully with VS.NET 2005.|||Hi !!

Thank you all for your reply !!!

Just Three questions:-

1) As the application that i iw ill write will be for commercial use, can i use the software free and no license is required to pay for?

2) i use VS.NET 2003, will that be ok?

3) CAn the suggested versions of the SQL Server hold a large number of data? and is it easy in the future to convert to a better versions with transfer all the data from old to new version (in case it is needed in the future)?

Thank you again for your help, and i wish you can advise more!!!sql
