Please help me install RS on Vista Business 64bit
here
I've gone into Programs and Features and enabled all the IIS/ASP.NET stuff
posted on the internet.
I've also created a IWAM_computername account and added it to the
Administrators group.
The setup program says it has to be run from the command prompt with the
SKUUPGRADE=1 paramater and now I'm resorting to tedious guesswork.
This is what I've tried:
E:\ENGLISH\SQL2005\DEVELOPER\SQL Server x64\Servers>setup.exe
ADDLOCAL=RS_Server
INSTANCENAME=SQL2K5 RSACCOUNT="mycomputername\Clive"
RSPASSWORD="thepassword" SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb
It gets to installing Reporting Services and when the status is "Configuring
Components" it gives the error:
"SQL Server setup could not validate the service accounts. Either the
service accounts have not been provided for all of the services being
installed, or the specified username or password is incorrect. For each
service, specify a valid username, password and domain or specify a built-in
system account."
I've also tried:
E:\ENGLISH\SQL2005\DEVELOPER\SQL Server x64\Servers>setup.exe
ADDLOCAL=RS_Server
INSTANCENAME=SQL2K5 RSACCOUNT="LocalSystem" SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb
and
E:\ENGLISH\SQL2005\DEVELOPER\SQL Server x64\Servers>setup.exe
ADDLOCAL=RS_Server
INSTANCENAME=SQL2K5 RSACCOUNT=LocalSystem SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb
Any help much appreciated!
Clive (London UK)If you don't get any help here you might have better luck on the web forum.
It has the other RS MVP and lots more MS people hanging there.

> Clive (London UK)|||Ok to begin with if there was not an IWAM_ account already created then you
don't need to create one.
Secondly ignore that SKUUPGRADE thing. It's just a warning and I've seen it
when I know for a fact that I am using the same edition that was already
installed.
Follow the steps in the article here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934164/en-us
Also, make sure that you've run aspnet_regiis -i from the
c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework64\v2.0.50727 folder. If the 64bit ASP
.NET extensions aren't registered then it won't even load up the pages in
the first place. Then make sure that the 32bit ASP .NET web service
extensions have been disabled from IIS and that the 64bit extensions are
enabled.

that also no new RS system DBs have been added).
I've removed all mentions of ASP.NET 32 in IIS Manager (Anything that didn't
say 64) - from ISAPI and CGI Restrictions and ISAPI Filters
The Reporting Services Configuration Manager gives a WMI error (see below):
What else am I doing wrong?
(I've ended up installing various instances and setup REMOVE=RS_Server
doesn't seem to be removing them. Tips on that would also be helpful.)
Many thanks,
Clive

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

available."
There was a bug that caused this error on Vista Systems but it was fixed in
SP2.
Did you install Reporting Services before or after you installed SP2?
If you installed Reporting Services after you installed SP2 then you will
need to apply SP2 again since Reporting Services will not be upgraded and
therefore the bug will not be fixed.
If you want you can delete the ReportServer and TempDB databases since they
can be easily recreated using the configuration tool.

install RS again.
Now I've applied SP2 to the failed RS installation from original CD - and it
is looking much better - but I still can't access the reportserver from IE -
it fails to authenticate when I try to log in as Administrator. It just
keeps prompting again for username and password - and I've changed the Admin
password so as to be sure I'm definitely entering it correctly in IE. After
three attempts it gives HTTP Error 401.3 - Unauthorized
In Programs and Features, in IIS -> World Wide Web Services -> Security,
I've turned on Windows Authrntication as well as Basic Authrntication,
Request Filtering and URL Authorisation
I've tried too many things to mention - and I think it's now a complete
mess. Now I'd just like to wipe off all instances of the DB Engine and RS
but I'm even having difficulty doing that. The uninstall program only
mentions some of the instances - and after "uninstalling" an RS instance -
it's still there!
Is there a global SS 2005 wipe function that will enable me to start again?
If not I think I'll just wipe Vista and put Win 2003 on the laptop and start
again from there.
Many thanks for your help

started again.
RS2005 now works on Vista Business 64 - albeit web access is a bit slow to
get going.
But the important thing is it's working - thank you very much for your help.

for a few days.
I was going to mention to you that a 401.3 error means that the account
accessing the web page does not have file access permissions to the file
being accessed. If you are using "anonymous" access this usually means that
the IUSR_MACHINENAME account does not have access to the SRS files in the
C:\program files\microsoft sql server\MSSQL.#\Reporting Services\Report
Manager folder. So all you need to do is add the IUSR_MACHINENAME account
to the Report Manager folder, give it read access and make sure that the
subfolders/items get that setting too.
Good luck on your future SRS endeavors :)

Another logreader agent for the subscription(s) is running.
NOTE: The step was retried the requested number of times (10) without succeeding .The step failedIs the logreader job still failing?
If so, the same logreader job is actually running on your publisher. It may be an orphaned process. If so, you will need to kill it.

Please help (Sql server 2000) Critical Error
Last night my Sql Server was writting info on the Log file of one database when the power accidentally shut down. In fact, the server was executing one Microsoft Data Transformation Service ( DTS ) which transfers data from one table to another.
This morning when the users tried to work with this database everything went wrong... I've not been able to attach MDF AND LDF files to SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine.
Looking for what happened I found those Info/Error LOG events:
A)Starting up database 'pcserveis'.
B)ex_raise2: Exception raised, major=34, minor=48, severity=21, attempting to create symptom dump
C) "The transaction ( Process Id 5 ) was left in "interblockade" in Lock
resources with another process and was chosen as subject of the "interblockade". Execute the transaction again." ( Sorry about wrong words , i'm using a translation tool from spanish )
D) Could not undo log record (5019077:221:133), for transaction ID (0:15254626), on page (1:1917), database 'pcserveis' (database ID 11). Page information: LSN = (5019072:426:5), type = 1. Log information: OpCode = 2, context 1.. ( Error: 3448, Severity: 21, State: 1)
E)Error while undoing logged operation in database 'pcserveis'. Error at log record ID (5019077:221:133).. (Error: 9004, Severity: 23, State: 7)
F)An error occurred while processing the log for database 'pcserveis'..
What can i do to restore my database? ThanksYou log file is toasted because of the power outage. Create a new log file and attach it to you database. But all transactions in th log file cannot be recovered. The other choice you have is to restore the database from the backup file and reprocess everything, assuming you have a good backup.|||Obviously, this morning when the users noticed me the problem , i've restored last backup and they kept on working.
My request was about if could be possible to repair the database more than a problem of losing data.
Is there any solution or the only thing to do is to restore the last backUp?|||You will only lose the uncommitted data if you rebuild the log file. That is probably you best bet for not losing the data between the time the database crushed and the last backup run in this situation.|||Thanks for your assistance.
Please help > Problem restoring database
We have 2 database on a production server running sql express 2005, the first one is 200mb and the other one is 1.3gig.
We make backup under sql management studio using option full.
When we try to recover database on another server the 200mb database restore perfectly, the 1.3 gig
always fail with the following message :
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The file "database_name" failed to initialize correctly. Examine the error logs for more details. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
We tried dbcc checkdb and everything seems alright.
I updated the statistics, no change.
I switched the recovery model from full to simple, no change.
I tried using "restore database from disk='' with norecovery, same error message
We tried stopping the production server then copying the file to the other server and attaching and it still fail with the following message :
An error occured when attaching the database(s). >
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)
Unable to open the physical file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\database_Data.MDF". Operating system error 8: "8(error not found)". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5120)
We dont know what to try anymore, the goal is to be sure our backup are alright....
Please helppppp ! thank you.
sorry for my bad english...
Ok, I uninstalled avg antivirus, then free my disk drive to have 10gig free.
restored my backup and it completed successfully !!!!
thank you for your help rmiaosql

Please help - SQL Server Services are missing
attempted restarting Win 2K I got the error
\Winnt\System32\Config\System is missing or corrupt.
I tried repairing did not work and I did not have a emergency repair
backup disk I used Win2K got in on Console mode and restore
C:\winnt\repair\system to \winnt\System32\config\system
Now I can boot into my Win2K Server all software works except that my
SQL Server services have all gone missing in Services.
When I use service manager I get the following message "The specified
service does not exist as an service". When I attempt to start SQL
Server I get the following error:
An error 1060-(The specified service does not exist as an installed
service) occurred while performing this service operation on the
MSSQLServer service.
Please advice how I can recreate or regenerate all the SQL Server and
Analysis Services services.
Thanks
SimonHello Simon
Sounds like there was some type of catastrophic error at OS/hardware level.
This most likely resulted in some of the registry being corrupted hence
affecting SQL Server. If registry has corrupted in this manner, chances are
that some/all other applications on that machine may be affected also.
I would advise you to get the System Eventlog from the machine and try to
diagnose what happened. If the issue has been diagnosed and fixed already,
then go ahead and reinstall the OS and all other applications. If you have
a backup of the entire machine (including registry) then it may save you
time just by restoring the backup.
Thank you for using Microsoft newsgroups.

Karen,
Windows 2000 uses IIS 5.0.
It's a while since I used Windows 2000 but I think you can install IIS
5.0 using Add/Remove Programs.
Or simply put the Windows CD in the drive and select the option that
allows you to install additional components.
Andrew Watt
MVP - InfoPath|||By default IIS is not running in 2000 Professional. What you need to do is
go to control panel, add remove programs and then on the left pane (I am
remembering this so exactly how you get to it might be off a little) is
something you select to add remove Windows components. That is where you
install IIS. You will be prompted for your Windows install disk (I believe,
it has been awhile). You will also need to install dotnet 1.1 after you get
IIS installed.

Thanks for the quick feedback.
Will reporting services work on SQL Developer edition and Windows 2000
Professional if I install IIS 5.
Also, can you please recommend some 3rd party authoring tools that
enable quick authoring of reporting services reports and deploying
them if thru Excel it will be very good.
Thanks

Definitely worth reading:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/deploy/rsdepgd.mspx
As far as the database
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/reporting/productinfo/sysreqs.asp
Note that it says to use the version of database to match the version of RS.
To me that means if you have developer edition of SQL Server that you should
use the same or Reporting Services (i.e. this is good for test and
development only).
MS has a partner page:

PLEASE HELP - Accessing Web Services through Windows App
I am running a vb.net application that is using the Web Service to
issue Update Snapshot. There is a Windows account we are using as a
Service account that has the proper permissions to Generate Events.
The application is running on AutoSys on a 2003 server. I have
confirmed that it will run under this users credentials manually by
logging into the server as the user and firing the app. It works
without a problem. This was using Default Credentials.
The AutoSys job is configured to run under this user's credentials.
There are three ways I have executed this application
>>Through AutoSys running as the user with the proper permissions (this is in place of a Local Service account which is default for AutoSys. This windows user has local admin permissions on the AutoSys server as well as Generate Event permission as confirmed before)
>>By logging into the server as Administrator and executing the app with "Run As..." set to the Windows ID
>>By switching to new.NetworkCredentials and passing the hardcoded username/pass/domain
For all of the above scenarios - it fails
The ONLY time it successfully issues UpdateSnapshot is when I amlogged in to the server as the user in question. In ALL other
instances detailed above it fails and the following comes out of the
event log
"Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'MyDomainName'.
I have no idea why it is choking on the Domain Name in all three of
those scenarios.
Do I need to impersonate that user through code when passing the Web
Service credentials?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help - I need to wrap this up. ANY HELP WOULD BE
GREATLY APPRECIATED
Could you show a sample of your code? Syntax error indicates compilation/parsing error. AutoSys method #2 or #3 sound like they should be workable.
Thank you.
|||I was wrong (partially) - the error I am referring to in the original post is being caused by my attempt to trap the error and write it to a log table in SQL Server. The error is actually as follows
The permissions granted to user 'mydomain\myuser' are insufficient for performing this operation
The fact that there are single quotes in the error is causing a syntax error in my SQL statement.
So - the actual user still does not have the permissions needed to issue UpdateSnapshot. I have confirmed with the Administrators that the user is in a role on the server that contains Generate Events and is also a Browser on all reports on the server.
I did this before in a previous environment and it worked perfectly. Can anyone definitively tell me what permissions are required in order to do things like UpdateSnapshot, FireEvent, CreateSubscription? I thought Generate Events was all that was needed.
During testing I was using my ID to do it and it worked. So I thought I could just create a dummy account and give it the permissions. I am stumped
|||
For update snapshot, you need Execute permission on the report you operate on. You can get it from Manage Report or Manager History task.
You are right for FireEvent you need Generate Event task (which contains generate event permission).
For CreateSubscription, you need either CreateSubscription or CreateAnySubscription permission. It is in "Manage Individual Subscriptions" or "Manage Any subscriptions" task.
|||Thank you - I did discover that I was looking at the wrong permissions for Updating a Snapshot. The problem I originally had raises and interesting question. How do I handle the SOAP exception with the single quotes in it if I want to write that to a SQL Table? Seems odd that an error would contain single quotes!
|||This is the way we choose to mark the name (RS item name, username, etc.). I guess you can do a string replacing before you insert into your table.sql

Planning the rebuild of a merge publication (publisher) server
publisher & distributor of a large merge publication DB. The current NT 4.0
server is scheduled for complete replacement and upgrade (to Win Server 2003
w/ SQL Server 2000) and I am looking for best practice recommendations for
transferring this database and replication topology from one system to
another. If possible, I would prefer to not to have to perform a complete
rebuild the replication topology. SQL BOL seems to indicate that Backup &
Recovery is not an option. Any ideas?
Thanks, Kevin
Kevin,
you should be able to detach and attach your publication database provided
you migrate master, msdb and the distribution database first, and the new
server name is identical to the old one. If this is too much hassle, then
you'd be better off scripting out the replication settings, tailoring them
with the new server name and then recreating from scratch.

Plan not using Index
come up with a valid reason why SQL is doing what s is doing...
In a nut shell I have three tables
t1 is a fact table
t2 is a time dimension table
t3 is a parameter table that get loaded prior to the query being executed.
Simple code
Select count (t1.stuff)
From t1
Inner join t2
On
t1.date_key = t2.date_key
Inner join t3
on
t2.date_number between t3.start_date and t3.end_date
The optimizer performs a full table scan on the fact then applies the date
range filter... Though if I were to replace the start_date and end_date
values with hardcode values then the optimizer uses the index and pulls only
those records needed from the fact.
Really weird...
Any thoughts?
Thanks
EricStatistics for the tables/index are probably out of date. Update them
using UPDATE STATISTICS command. See if that helps. Or provide an index
hints to the query to specify which index you want it to use. Like:
Select count (t1.stuff)

Inner join t2
On
t1.date_key = t2.date_key
Inner join t3
on
t2.date_number between t3.start_date and t3.end_date

it cannot make a decision based on those dates. As a result, it is unable
to use the index on the dates, since they are unknown. Again, this is just
a guess and could be totally off.
Also, I don't think the statistics on table T3 reflect the current data, but
rather the (completely unrelated) data that was present when the statistics
were generated. I am assuming that statistics on this table are either non
existent, or were generated when the table had no data in it. Try inserting
a row into the table and generating statistics on it, then removing that
row, and running your process again. It is possible that having statistics
with a single valid row in this table will cause the optimizer to choose the
correct path.
Just a couple of ideas.

I confirmed that the stats on t3 were up to date and truncated the table,
reloaded in it and once again updated the stats. Unfortunately the plan
result was the same.
I assume the optimizer know what is in a table based on the table stats
now taking what you had mentioned into count I think you may be on to
something... but the wrench is why is it if I use a SARG value or create an
additional year column in t3 and make the year column in t2 equal to year i
n
t3 the index get used.
Select count (t1.stuff)
From t1
Inner join t2
On
t1.date_key = t2.date_key
Inner join t3
on
t2.date_number between t3.start_date and t3.end_date and
t2.year_number = t3.year_number
Thanks|||Eric,
It's impossible for the optimizer to do anything but make generic rowcount
estimates for predicates that involve comparing columns from one table
with columns from another. Here, for example, the actual limiting values
of t2.date_number are unknown until run-time, so the histogram of
t2.date_number values is basically useless for plan costing.
By adding an extra superfluous condition to your join's ON clause,
you are reducing the generic rowcount estimate used by the optimizer.
With nothing else to go on, the optimizer will assume that fewer rows
match (<this condition> AND <that condition> ) than match (<this condition> ).
Assuming that fewer rows from t2 match the condition, the estimated cost
of using the index drops, while the cost of a table scan does not drop, and
the change is enough to make the plan that uses an index appear cheapter.

optimizational purposes. This makes perfect sense since a single value is
more exlicit and easier to determine ahead of time than a range of values.
However, you did not state whether or not this year_number column is indexed
or not. If there is an index on this field , then I would expect it to make
a difference simply because it is easier for the optimizer to know that it
is targeting a certain percentage of rows with the join. If there is no
index, then Steve Kass's explanation seems the only way to explain it.
Regardless, I find that the behavior of the optimizer never ceases to amaze
me.
