Hello gurus,
Our SQL Servers is giving us a headache, after a certain period in time, either SQL Service automatically shuts down by itself or hangs. I've opened the logs and found hex dumps. Can you help me out with these?

Please advice me on my next step. ThanksProbably need the latest service packs:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q293292/|||May also be a plain ol' memory or disk issue. Have you checked the hardware?|||hi blindmin: yes, we've installed the latest service packs both for our OS (windows 2000 server sp4) and rdbms (sql server 2000 sp4)
ReadySetStop: Memory for one, might serve as culprit. our box is running under DELL PowerEdge 1955 (blade server). memory is around 8GB (6gb goes to SQL, 2 GB goes to OS). There was a time when we ported from one blade to another blade server because of faulty OS. Before, when SQL encounters errors, the whole thing just freezes up. Now, SQL has the ability to shoot out hex dumps. That's why I need to have a basis before pointing it directly to a hardware fault.|||these were not the only hex dumps i've encountered. There were some hex dumps that has some variable declaration and value assigning like declare @.asdf datetime etc and lots of hex equivalents on the side. So, it might not only be DBCC stuffs. Just don't know where to start|||If the errors is not related only to DBCC, then I too would look at bad memory as the next possible culprit.|||just an update, we've managed to consult Microsoft for these errors. Initially, they told us that there's an issue having /PAE enabled. I'll keep you guys posted.|||just an update guys, got this from MS tech support.
Hi
I noticed the two SQL Servers have AWE enabled, while the platform is Windows 2000 (Build 2195: Service Pack 4). We have a known issue on such environment, with the similar dump call stacks. Please refer to the following URL.
Access violations when you use the /PAE switch in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838647
You may notice unpredictable behavior on a multiprocessor computer that is running SQL Server 2000 and has the Physical Addressing Extensions (PAE) specification enabled
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838765/en-us
To avoid the issue, could you please upgrade your Windows 2000 to Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4? For more information about the Rollup, please refer to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861/en-us
And it can be downloaded from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B54730CF-8850-4531-B52B-BF28B324C662&displaylang=en
After applied it, please keep monitoring your SQL Server. If the issue reoccurs, please send me your SQL Server errorlog files with the new dump file generated.

Please help - DTS problems in SQL 7 --> AS/400
I was wondering if any of you could shed some light on the following
problem?
We have 4 Servers (WinNT SP6, SQL 7 SP3, IBM Client Access ODBC ver 6,
DR, Production, Development, Test) on our Datawarehousing Project.
They in turn connect to AS/4000 systems (Live, Dev, Test, 1st two
running version 4.5, last one upgraded to 5.1) for data refreshes,
using SP's and lots of DTS Packages.
Problem is that whenever we try to run DTS (using dtsrun.exe, works
fine in Designer Mode) against the upgraded AS/400 system on our Test
Server it gives out the following error:
DTSRun: Loading... DTSRun: Executing... DTSRun OnStart:
DTSStep_DTSActiveScriptTask_5 DTSRun OnFinish:
DTSStep_DTSActiveScriptTask_5 DTSRun OnStart:

Data Transformation Services (DTS) Package Help file: sqldts.hlp
Help context: 700. Process Exit Code 1. The step failed.
However, when I run the same DTS Packages from our Live, Dev and DR
machines, it works fine!
I have checked and double-checked the revision details, all four boxes
are the same. I have run the error message against MS KB and IBM,
nothing. Before the AS/400 was upgraded the DTS Packages DID work, now
they only work from other NT boxes and not the Test Server which is
most bizarre. I've rebooted twice, nada.
Any help, suggestions, pointers etc. would be much appreciated.

Can you isolate this and run it. What does it do? If everything alse runs

Please Help
Hi all,
I need to solve a problem with SQL replication, I know very little about it,
and it wasn't me that set it up.
However we have 2 servers both with sql server 2000 Lets say server A & B
server A has been setup as the publisher & distributor with a transaction
push subscription to server B that has been setup as a subscriber.
I want this to work both ways but it doesn't seem to be replicating from
server B to A. Does anybody know what I can look into to check out what's
happening here?
Thanks
Gav

Please Help
Hi all,
I need to solve a problem with SQL replication, I know very little about it,
and it wasn't me that set it up.
Thanks

Please forgive me....
I know this has been talked about again, and again.. but
This is what i got..
1. 2x Windows 2003 Ent servers.. attached to a dell powervault 220s
storage array that has
a. 3x arrays, 1 for the the quorom, 1 for each clusternode's
data disk
2. SQL 2005 Installed with a default instance named lets say sql1 as
the virtual servername, and it's IP address
What the developers said they need / want is another "default" instance,
or something that from there programs just call a single name instead of
having to use the virtualservername\instance name so something more like
sql2, is this possible... i have been reading that it isn't.. that you will
end up with virtualservername\instance for anything other then the default
instance. Also i have been reading that you can alias the
virtualservername\instance in DNS with a SRV record, but i dont seem to have
a type of _sql or something listed in the srv records available to me on my
2000 AD,,, what am i missing to make this work the way the developers needs?
Please help me, thanks!
So what they're saying is they need sql2 instead of sql1\B? Have them go to
the CFO and cost justify why buying another cluster is worth them not having
to type those two extra characters. Let us know what he says.

Additionally: unless the developers are hard-coding the name of the
server into their apps (which would be the height of stupidity, IMO),
the 'virtualserver\instance' name should be transparently
interchangeable with the default instance's 'server' name.
My organization has several apps that were originally implemented on
individual hosts using the default instance on each host. We ponied up
for some big hardware to create a cluster, and now we run several named
instances on an active/active cluster without any special
support/assistance from the developers: we simply substituted the
'servername' with 'server\instance' in all the configuration locations
(whether it was an ODBC DSN, registry string or INI file) to get it to
'just work.'
AFAIK, this is supported because of the SQL Server driver, not the
creative coding of the application developer.

AFAIK, this is supported because of the SQL Server driver, not the
creative coding of the application developer.

planning a replication
hallo
we have a sql2000 in the headquarter, and 3 new remote branches opening in few weeks with no sql servers installed yet.
We plan to setup a merge replica. The headquarter will have the highest activity on the replicated tables.
Shall we use all SQL2000 in the remote branches? Or could we use SQL2005, using a 2005 as a publisher and distributor?
TIA
we're not going to upgrade the only sql2000 server we have, but i'd prefere to use sql2005 in the remote branches: in this scenario, i could set one of the 2005 as distributor and publisher.
This would be in contrast with the network topology, that centers everything in the main plant; BTW there will not be a big traffic of replicated data: a theoretical maximum of about 10 records/minute.

If possible, upgrade all your nodes to SQL 2005. Merge replication performs and scales much better with the new pre-computed partitions. If this is not possible, then the only supported configuration is that the version of the distributor >= version of the publisher >= version of the subscriber. You can find more info about this in topic Using Multiple Versions of SQL Server in a Replication Topology".

Place one Chart on top of another one
I am trying to place one chart on top of another chart in report designer.
Everything looks go. So, I publish the report to Reporting Servers and for
some reason the graphs are placed next to one another instead of being on top
of each other. How can I fix this problem?
The reason why I am placing one chart on top of another chart is because I
can not figure out how to pass a value to CROSS AT property in a Bubble
chart. Does anyone know how to do this as well?
Thanks,
PeterHTML renderer does not support overlapping objects. You can try and render
it PDF or Jpeg and it will be overlapped, but not in HTML.

Thanks for the response. When I export the report to pdf is does work.
However, when I publish the report to Reporting Services the default viewer
is HTML. Is there away to set the default view in Reporting Services to PDF?

That worked thanks. I almost have it. This particular report has parameter
prompts. Is there away for the user to have the ability to pick there own
parameter values from the prompts or am I stuck hard coding in the values for
them?

If you create a report parameter and don't specify any values, then the user
will get a text box where they can type anything. I think that's what you're
asking about -- usually people ask the opposite, how to create drop down
lists or how to fill those lists from a query. This is all well documented
in BOL, see the article "Using Parameters in a Report."
